Can Fish Drown?

The short answer is… Yes, but not in the way that humans can drown. Due to circumstances or conditions in the tank, a fish can not successfully reach high enough oxygen levels needed to survive. So, a fish can suffocate from not getting enough oxygen.

How Can Fish Drown

The largest contributors to a fish drowning is the fish tank conditions.

  1. Keeping too many fish in a tank can deplete oxygen levels to dangerous levels for your fishie friends.
  2. Algae blooms can explode and offset the natural order of a healthy, oxygenated fish tank.
  3. If a tanks water temperature is too high, it can make it harder for the fish to dissolve the oxygen in the water.
  4. If the water flow is stagnant, it can impede the natural cycle of oxygen gathering from the fish.
